John is employed by Ecology UK Ltd in the capacity of Senior Ecologist and manages the workload of the companies Bristol Office. He holds an Honours Degree in Biology, a Masters Degree in Landscape Ecology, Design and Maintenance from Wye College, University of London and is a full member of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management. He is currently undertaking part-time postgraduate research with the University of Birmingham examining the ecology and restoration of the Chequered Skipper Butterfly in conjunction with English Nature and Butterfly Conservation.
John's current work includes carrying out and supervising a wide range of ecological field surveys including botanical, mammal, ornithological, invertebrate, reptile and amphibian surveys.
John is a highly competent phase I and phase II vegetation surveyor having been carrying out surveys on a regular basis for over ten years including detailed botanical surveys of Chequered Skipper sites in Europe. He is also a competent butterfly surveyor.
John also has responsibility for management of the ecological input to large environmental Assessment schemes including major road developments, windfarms, mineral, landfill and residential developments.
John is also a very experienced extended phase I habitat surveyor and has carried out river corridor and river habitat surveys.
John is an effective communicator and efficient producer of understandable technical reports. He is also highly computer literate and has extensive experience of data inputting using a variety of computer packages including Microsoft Office 2000, MATCH, VESPAN, RECORDER and MapInfo GIS.
Before joining Ecology UK Ltd John was employed with Wakefield MDC in the position of Environment Officer.
John's work with Wakefield MDC involved the preparation and implementation of site management plans, ecological and landscape design and implementation for land reclamation and landscape conservation schemes. He was responsible for contract document preparation and the supervision of direct labour teams.
John has been involved in strategic initiatives including involvement with the Biodiversity Action Plan for Wakefield and species Biodiversity Action Plans.
Prior to joining Wakefield MDC John was employed as habitat surveyor and Landscape Manager with the Urban Wildlife Group, Birmingham and as Management Plan Data Collector for the National Trust.
